Day 33 AM: new challenges

We received two pieces of distressing news late last night. First, the preliminary read from the skin biopsy is that the rash is caused by severe graft vs. host disease. This is just preliminary, and we haven't had a report from dermatology yet, so we don't know how sure they are of the result. Second and more urgently, Mina Brigitta has a bacterial infection. The blood culture drawn yesterday morning grew enterocuccus bacteria (http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=20162. It's a classic case where the infection likely came from her bowels and entered her bloodstream through an open sore. She had been on antibiotics to cover against this kind of infection, but they were pulled on Sunday on recommendation from the dermatologist, in case they were contributing to Stevens-Johnson syndrome. The doctors knew there was a strong possibility that this kind of infection could occur, but felt they could take a calculated risk because the "gram positive" bacteria that enter through the skin tend to be slow-growing.

Dr. Horn told us last night that the next 12-24 hours will be critical to see how she responds. She was already showing some signs of sepsis (http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=5449) yesterday, particularly the intestinal bleeding and decreased urine output. She remained very stable throughout the night, even sitting up for an hour or so and interacting. Her fever also diminished during the night and was gone by this morning. However, the bacteria probably hasn't grown to its full potential yet. It helps a lot that Mina Brigitta has a healthy neutrophil count, so she has some ability to fight the infection on her own. Thanks again to everyone for writing in; it really means a lot to know that we have so much support. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers over the next day or two to help Mina Brigitta clear this infection.

I can imagine it's nice to know what they are fighting at least so they can treat it appropriately. Mina is definitely where she needs to be for now, but she will and is improving - thank God! There are many people on my email list up here as well that are keeping her in their prayers. Keep your chins up. She is an amazing little girl and your family is as well! Blessing to you today and to little Mina!

I'm still pedalling with Brigitta in my mind on every stroke. Last weekend I did a 110 mile ride in the Santa Cruz mountains. I finished strong, and hoped my strength would be transferred along to Brigitta. This weekend I'll be at the Tahoe Team in Training Ride - and there will be 100's of riders focussed on better treating cancer. My thoughts & prayers are with you.

I am one of the mommies on the LLS bulletin board (RyansMom). I don't post often because my 2 year old son is fighting high risk A.L.L., but I have read about Mina's fight for quite a while now. She, and all of you, are in my prayers. She is a beautiful, strong little person. Years from now, I hope you'll be explaining to your healthy little Mina Brigitta about how brave she was through her whole illness. I also hope that she doesn't believe you, because she's healthy and happy!
The NP who cares for my son says that survivor stories are FULL of ICU tales and BMT horrors! I am praying for you and hoping that each day is a little better than the one before.

One of the room mates I had in the hospital was a man who had been through a BMT. He told me it was like being in the ring for 17 rounds with Mohd. Ali with you not getting even one shot in. But he came through, and we are all in her corner, rooting, praying, crying and willing incredible little Mina and her amazing parents through this ordeal.
    Prayers and love,
    Hari

We've been following along each day. Thanks so much for letting us ride along with you - to the extent that we are able at a distance. We've been thinking and praying for Mina (we feel like we know her well even though we haven't met her yet) and for you and Keri. With love -
