So close we could taste it
We were packed up to go home today when Mina Brigitta spiked a low-grade fever. She hung out around 100 most of the afternoon, briefly spiking up to 100.8. That was enough for them to keep us here overnight for observation, but not to start another round of antibiotics. That's good because we really want her liver and kidneys to have a couple of weeks to recover before beginning BMT conditioning. However, they wanted to keep her close because if she spiked higher they'd want to start antibiotics immediately. Keri was fit to be tied, and I was none too happy myself, but in the grand scheme it's probably better to be safe than sorry. They promised to let us go first thing in the morning if no more fevers. Her temperature is way back down as of midnight, so Keri's planning on picking me up at 6:30 AM. It'll be good to get out of there before they have time to change their minds!
Thanks to everyone who wrote about the sterility issue. It's definitely comforting to know there may be alternatives for her, but it's still a tough thing to think about doing to your 22-month old daughter. And of course, I'd be extremely thankful just to have the opportunity to talk to her about this in 20 years.
Also, thanks much to everyone who has asked about being typed for a bone marrow match. Here's the issue: apparently the odds of anyone we know being a match, even close relatives like cousins, aunts or uncles, are too small to justify the effort and the expense. Unfortunately, you'd have to pay for the tests yourselves, and they're not cheap. There's also the issue of timing; she either needs to get a transplant in the next few weeks, or else she needs to have another round of chemo, with another set of risks and side effects, to keep her in remission. So we basically need to have a donor by next week. All that said, if anyone wants to pay for the tests themselves and can do it right away, contact me and I'll find out where to have the info sent to see if it's a match for Mina Brigitta. That way, at the very least, your typing info would be on the registry, and who knows, maybe it would be a match for another little girl like Mina Brigitta. Here's the link to find out more info about how to become a donor:

Dear Arne,
I've been following Mina Brigitta's progress on the Leukemia Society discussion board and now on her blog.
You've been doing a fantastic job of caring for her and updating the blog.
I don't know much about AML because my son has T ALL and I've confined my research to his diagnosis.
Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg at Duke was able to find a cord blood match for my son, whose odds of finding a marrow donor are very low. She did a 4/6 transplant for a four year old with T ALL (also from California) and he's on about day 275 and doing really well. I heard about Dr. Kurtzberg from a neighbor whose infant daughter was cured of relapsed AML five years ago after a transplant at Duke.
Dr. Kurtzberg's email address is kurtz001@mmc.duke.edu (If there's a typo in there you can get it off the Duke website anytime.)
I hope this helps. Congratulations on achieving a scond remission! I'm one of the many people praying for a good outcome for your beloved girl.

Hey Guys,
Miss Mina had better be home by now with her family. You all need the break of home before the next battle (which little miss will win). I am so amazed by the positive thoughts and feelings of those who write on this blog. Missa Mina has touched a lot of lives with her ability to just be herself through all of this. SHE WILL WIN AND WILL TRIUMPH. I will call you tommorow. Jackie thank you for your input I believe that you always need to have as much input as possible. I know that Keri and Arne also believe that and are always researching the best information they can have. Thank you for taking time out from the issues in your life to care about our little Mina Brigitta. I will include your son in my prayers. Well Mina enjoy your time at home with Daddy, Mommy, and Brother. Always know you are in our thoughts and our prayers. When I went out to feed tonight Mr. Goat asked when you were coming to visit again and I assured him that it would be soon. Well then Nicki and Cinco thought they would get in on the act and I PROMISED them they would see you next summer. Anyway Sage and Basil send lots of licks and wiggles they miss you and your babydolls.
Love you tons,
Auntie Kristi, Uncle Bill and Kendra

Dear Keri and Arne,
Don and I have been out here "looking in" and want you to know how much you, and of course little Mina Brigitta and Isaac (whom we have not yet met!), mean to us. We are amazed at your strength. We are also amazed at little Mina Brigitta's strength and perseverance in this struggle. She is a special little girl!
Please know each of you are constantly on our minds and in our prayers.
Lots of love,
Aunt Joan
